| Supply Chain Engineering Cases |
| Wed, 15 Feb 2006 08:59:00 CST |
| An updated version of the Supply_Chain_Engineering_Cases.pdf paper has been added to the Applications Papers section of the library. |
|
This document provides a variety of mini-cases in Supply Chain Engineering. The situations covered include: simple distribution and DC location, FTL and LTL vehicle routing, production and demand planning, inventory management, international sourcing in the face of foreign exchange risk and tariffs, and incentive compatibility in supply chain contracts. Data for each mini-case are provided in a spreadsheet. Many of the cases have a “think outside the box” wrinkle whereby one can do better if one violates an intuitive but unnecessary constraint. The cases come from two sources: a) Developed and tested in a Logistics/Supply Chain course, and b) based on providing optimization based solutions to industrial supply chain customers. For more complicated cases, partially developed models are provided. Where spreadsheet models are provided, good professional quality spreadsheet style is used. These cases have been useful in the classroom, to supplement standard textbook problems with bigger more realistic situations, and for potential industrial users as illustrations of what improvements are possible. Click here to download the doc. |
| Kendall Tau |
| Fri, 10 Feb 2006 08:45:00 CST |
| The existing example LINGO model on Kendall Tau correlation coefficients is updated with a new and improved model. |
|
The advantage of the Kendall tau correlation coefficient is that it is non-parametric. E.g., if you compute the Kendall tau correlation for a set of uniform random variables, and then transform these uniforms into Normal random variables using monotonic increasing transformations, the Kendall tau correlation remains unchanged. Its value is in the range [-1,+1]. For the Normal distribution, the relationship between the standard linear correlation, rho, and tau is: rho = sin(tau*pi/2). This relationship holds more generally for any so-called elliptic distribution. Click here to download the model. |

| Vehicle Routing |
| Thu, 02 Feb 2006 17:36:00 CST |
| A new Vehicle Routing or LTL delivery model using What'sBest! has been added to the model library. |
|
The first city is the Depot city. Vehicles, each of the same capacity, maked deliveries to the other cities. Each city other than the first has a demand, e.g., number of pallets, to be delivered. We want to find routes for the vehicles so as to minimize the distance traveled. Click here to download the model. |
| Tool Timing |
| Thu, 26 Jan 2006 09:15:00 CST |
| A new paper on Move Optimization in Multi-Slide Metal Forming has been added to the Applications Papers section of the library. |
|
An important segment of the metal forming industry is small metal parts forming. A common machine type used in this segment is the .fourslide. or .multislide. forming machine. In these machines, a metal part is formed as a result of several rams or .slides. pressing against a metal part from several different directions, e.g., four or more. In order to form the part correctly, the rams must press against the part in a carefully choreographed sequence. A notable feature of these machines is high production rate, e.g., several parts per second. The production rate is limited by physical laws related to how much acceleration and resulting stress the components of the machine can tolerate as the machine runs faster. Usually there is some uncertainty about how much acceleration various parts of the forming machine can tolerate. We describe a method for designing this choreography of movement so as to maximize the production rate, subject to keeping the accelerations in an acceptable range. The method involves optimizing a model that is essentially a PERT/CPM critical path problem with .crashing. of activities. Click here to download the doc. |

| Stable Matching |
| Tue, 03 Jan 2006 22:18:00 CST |
| Two new LINGO models, Stable Marriage Assignment and Stable Roommate Matching have been added to the model library. |
| Stable Marriage Assignment. Each of n men specify a rank, 1, 2,..., n, for each of n women. Similarly, each of the n women specify a preference rank for each of the men. We want to assign or match the men and women in couples that are stable, i.e., there are no man i and woman j who are not paired up, but would prefer to be paired up rather than be paired with their current partner. This LINGO model will find such a pairing that will minimize the worst that any person gets treated under this pairing. |
|
Stable Roommate Matching.
Each of 2n people specify a rank, 1, 2,..., 2n-1, for each other person. We want to pair up the people into a stable set of pairs, i.e., there are no two people i and j who are not paired up, but would prefer to be paired up rather than be paired with their current partner. It may be that there is no such a stable pairing. This LINGO model will find such a pairing if one exists, and will minimize the worst that any person gets treated under this pairing. |

| A regression model of LINGO that allows the user to set various weights and parameters controlling the style of regression has been added to the model library. |
|
