New What'sBest! 9.0
Faster and More Flexible Solvers
This new version 9.0, includes major enhancements regarding the Simplex method and the Mixed Integer Solver to handle more difficult linear and integer problems, and the Global Solver for better performance on models with multiple extreme points. Now What'sBest! can support Users' Defined Functions made in VBA, and models with string arguments. This version 9.0 has been adapted to run with Windows Vista and ExcelŽ 2007. See the full article for more details.
New LINDO API 5.0
The Faster, More Versatile Callable Solver
This new version of LINDO API 5.0 includes major enhancements for handling more difficult linear, nonlinear, and integer problems. LINDO API 5.0 also includes a special variant of the barrier solver specifically designed to solve Second-Order-Cone problems. LINDO API 5.0 offers two advanced implementations of the primal and dual simplex methods as the primary means for solving linear programming problems. See the full article for more details.
New LINGO 10.0
Faster and Improved Solvers
A faster, more powerful release of LINGO has recently begun shipping. LINGO 10 includes a number of new features that extend the functionality of the modeling language as well as several enhancements that boost the speed of the underlying solvers. See the full article for more details.

User Applications of LINDO Software
Are you Optimizing your Workforce?
More companies are choosing to use optimization to help schedule their workforce in an attempt to reduce payroll costs. Linear programming has been used to schedule staff at toll booths, phone personnel in call centers, airline crews, nurses in hospitals, and labor force in factories. Good schedules can mean lower payroll costs, improved customer service, and higher employee morale. For more information, see the full article.
Students Build a Better Bridge with What'sBest!
Civil engineering students at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette have found What'sBest! can be an extremely useful tool in the design and construction of a bridge. Using What'sBest!, the students made sure they optimized the structural efficiency while ensuring a design that was practical to build in a reasonable amount of time. "This was only possible through the use of What'sBest!," says Eddie Leblanc, UL Lafayette team representative. For more information, see the full article.
What's Best! Helps Welchs out of Jam
Welchs, the world's largest processor of Concord and Niagara grapes, has used What'sBest! and a linear programming model to provide senior management with information on an optimal logistics plan. "We have found that an investment in What'sBest!, plus the knowledge and motivation to use management science for better decision making yields a great multiple in return," remarked Schuster, who was Welch's corporate manager of operations planning. For more information, see the full article.

Textbooks on LINDO software
Many textbooks devote several pages to using LINDO software and discussing LINDO examples. Some even bundle the text with a student version of LINDO software. A few examples of successful textbooks are shown below:
An Introduction to Management Science, Quantitative Approaches to Decision Making
by David Anderson, Dennis Sweeney, Thomas Williams, and Kipp Martin
Many thousands of students have been learning about Management Science through the 12 editions of this classic textbook. There are extensive, realistic example problems throughout the text that make use of LINGO. Click here for more details.
Introduction to Mathematical Programming
by Wayne Winston and Munirpallam Venkataramanan
This textbook includes a CD with student versions of LINGO and LINDO. Winston was one of the first authors to incorporate a modeling language such as LINGO into an introductory operations research textbook. For more information, see the full article.
Decision Technology
by Bob Nydick and Matt Liberatore
This textbook comes complete with a CD containing software packages that correspond with the three management science concepts covered: LINGO for math programming, Expert Choice for decision analysis, and Extend for simulation. Numerous examples for each package are also included on the CD and discussed in detail in the text. For more information, see the full article.
Modeling the Supply Chain
by Jeremy Shapiro
A number of practical What'sBest! examples for production, transportation, and inventory planning problems are discussed in this text. "What'sBest! was a valuable tool in researching and writing my book," says Shapiro. For more information, see the full article.
Microeconomics: A Computational Approach
by Gerald E. Thompson
It's not unusual for a text to devote several pages to using LINDO software and discussing LINDO examples. It is not even unusual for the text to be bundled with a student version of LINDO. What is a bit unusual is for it to be an economics text. This textbook makes the combination of LINDO and economics seem quite natural. For more information, see the full article.
Introduction to Operations Research
by Frederick Hillier and Gerald Lieberman
Hillier and Lieberman have been introducing students to the principals of operations research for decades. The 8th edition of their popular text includes numerous examples formatted for LINDO, LINGO, and What'sBest!. For more information, see the full article.
