CutsBest

How It Works

The Cutting Stock Challenge

A cutting stock problem arises when manufacturers need to cut large raw materials, such as paper rolls, steel rods, or wooden planks, into smaller pieces to fulfill customer orders while minimizing waste. The challenge is to determine the most efficient cutting patterns that reduce leftover scraps and optimize material usage.

For example, a paper mill may have large 10-foot-wide paper rolls and needs to cut them into smaller 2-foot, 3-foot, and 5-foot widths based on customer demand. Without optimization, inefficient cuts could leave large unused scraps, increasing costs. An optimized solution finds the best way to cut the rolls, reducing waste, leading to cost savings and improved efficiency.

How the CutsBest Works

Solving the cutting stock problem can essentially be broken down into two steps:

  • Smart algorithms are used to generate an efficient set of possible cutting patterns for cutting the large stock into smaller pieces.
  • Optimization is then used to determine how much of each pattern should be cut so the demand requirements are satisfied at minimum cost.

Key Features

  • Handles complex conditions (for example: setup costs, kerf waste, inventory restrictions, etc. Click here for a full list of Key Considerations).
  • Works across industries: paper, textiles, steel, wood, etc.
